A Noble Man

Isaiah 32 8 "The noble man makes noble plans and by noble deeds he stands."  Within the context of Isaiah 32, this verse speaks powerfully to the impact a righteous king has upon the land.  When the king is righteous, the whole of society is elevated.

I want to surround myself with noble men!

They examined the Scriptures every day

One of the things that the Bereans of Acts 17 are applauded for is that they examined the Scriptures every day.  This verse is sometimes used as a proof text for the need for us to have daily devotions.  While I can think of many reasons why daily Bible intake is a good idea, this text does not really support that notion.  Within the context, Paul is teaching in the synagogue each day, and so it is within this context a natural response to anyone who is being taught.  The Bereans took what Paul taught and examined its content against Scripture.  The fact that they did it every day was more a function of how often Paul taught than a definitive statement of the Bereans being in the habit of daily devotions.

Liberty and Tyranny

Among the books I am presently reading is Mark Levin's Liberty and Tyranny.  I recommend it as a well thought out argument for conservatism in government.  Of course I can hardly read a book without relating it to the church.  Talking about the conditions of a civil society he says:

"In the civil society, the individual is recognized and accepted as more than an abstract statistic or faceless member of some group; rather, he is a unique, spiritual being with a soul and a conscience...In the civil society, the individual has a duty to respect the unalienable rights of others and the values, customs, and traditions, tried and tested over time and passed from one generation to the next, that establish society's cultural identity.  He is responsible for attending to his own well-being and that of his family.  And he has a duty as a citizen to contribute voluntarily to the welfare of his community through good works."

I think you may be able to substitute church for civil society and member (or church attender) for citizen and upon this basis develop a pretty good covenant for church attenders.

Time Changes

And yet everything remains pretty much the same.

Our internal clocks will take a little while to catch up with the mechanical clocks which rule our lives, and when they do, we will hardly notice that time has changed, because most everything else stays the same.

Dramatic, life changing change doesn't come about because we set our clocks back an hour!  Life altering change usually happens within the context of the people around us.  Kind of makes you want to be more careful about who you are spending time with....

Why did Jesus Weep?

As i was preparing a funeral message this past week I chose the text from John 11 which includes that death and resurrection of Lazarus.  It also tells us that Jesus wept.  I was thinking about why Jesus wept.  He knew (I assume) that he would shortly call fro the stone to be removed from Lazarus' grave and that Lazarus would come back to life.  Yet he wept.

I wonder if he wept because he was going to bring Lazarus back to life.  Lazarus was in paradise, and Jesus was about to call him back in to this sorry existence, only to eventually die again.  Of course the family, Mary and Martha, would have been over joyed.  But I wonder if Lazarus might have wanted to pull Jesus aside and quietly ask him "What did you go and to that for?"

Only 2 more years to the next election....

Walking through many stores over the past month we were greeted by Halloween candy, costumes and decorations.  And Christmas trees.  Businesses are always supposed to be looking ahead.  That of course doesn't necessarily mean that I want to be looking ahead to Christmas before we have even finalized plans for Halloween.

The same is true of elections.  We finally got most of the votes counted last night.  And we are already looking forward to what will happen in 2012.  So much can change in 24 months that is hardly seems worth it to spend much time prognosticating on that election.

And as far as elections go, whether you feel your ideas won or lost or some of both, elections come and go, but the Word of God endures.  And he says that whatever authority has been set over us is set there by him and we are therefore to pray for them, submit to them, and not put too much stock in their ability to address the greater issues of life.

The four freedoms made famous by FDR in 1941 (freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear) provided the impetus for great social change in the US as we engaged in a season of political activity specifically aimed at giving people the freedom from want.

Yet Jesus reminded us that we will always have the poor among us.  And as long as there are people who are poor (using whatever standard of poor you desire) people will want.  Wanting more seems to be a hallmark of humanity.  Government cannot give us freedom from want.  That can only come from a change of heart, to a heart of contentment grown in the soil of faith in God.

A life untormented

I have had the privilege this week of reading some thoughts written by a friend before he moved to heaven.  On the one side of the page are the wanderings of his mind.  Reflecting on life.  Facing the tensions and fears of any thinking man.  On the other side of the page were simply a list of Biblical references.  They proved to be a powerful antidote to the thoughts which arose in his own mind.

Nearly everyone has doubts and fears.  Many allow those doubts and fears to control their lives.  Despair becomes a way of life rather than a moment along the journey of life.  My friend had obviously looked to scripture to answer his concerns and tensions of life.

The passages he had referenced ranged from the expected (like I Corinthians 13) to the unexpected (like Joel 2:28-29).  He found solace from the broad spectrum of scripture, from the law, the history books, the poetry, the prophets and the epistles.  It is obvious from his writing that he read and studied and took to heart the teachings of God's word.

That only happens as we are committed to regular study of the word!

Crowns in Heaven

I just made passing reference to the crowns of heaven in my message, and had a slide with references directing you to passages which spoke of the crowns.  I would have liked to spend more time on the topic.  It may well work its way into a sermon series next year.

I named five crowns of heaven, the incorruptible crown, the crown of rejoicing, the crown of righteousness, the crown of glory and the crown of life.

The Crown of Righteousness,  will be given to those who have lived a good and righteous life for God while living down here on this earth.  Paul mentions it in II Timothy 4:7-8.

The Incorruptible Crown is mentioned in I Corinthians 9:25 as a reward for faithfulness in completing the race Christ has set before us.

The Crown of Life is sometimes called the Martyr's Crown because of its mention in Revelation 2:10.  But the same crown is mentioned in James 1:12 as going to those who persevered under trial, with no reference to death.

The Crown of Glory is mentioned in I Peter 5:2-4 as a reward for leadership within the local church.  This crown has sometimes been called the Shepherd's Crown and some suggest that it is only available to pastors.  I believe the context would indicate that this crown is awarded to leaders in the local church.

The Crown of Rejoicing, from I Thes 2:19-20 is perhaps the weakest argument for a crown in heaven.  In the context Paul is merely saying that those he has won to Christ will be his crown, his joy or his hope.  Some have called this the Soul Winners Crown.  It may just be Paul's way of saying when he observes those in heaven who point to him as the one who directed them to Christ, they will make him happy.

It's cold outside!

Woke up this morning to the thermometer reading 32 degrees outside.  Frost on the windows of the car (a garage is for junk - my car would be insulted to be stored there with all that low class stuff...) wondering which jacket to wear, even wondering if I should search out those nice gloves (that steering wheel is COLD).  But eventually I make it out and then into the word.  Decide in honor of the cold I would read something that referenced cold.  Hence, Proverbs 25:25

"Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land."

Okay, on a morning like this (admittedly not very cold by the standard of colder climes) instead of cold water I would prefer a nice hot shower or a cup of hot chocolate.  Still, the point is well taken.  When we are weary, (especially in summer) a cool glass of water is great medicine.

Good news from a distant land.  When this was written, it was perhaps more meaningful since there was no internet, no 24 hour news channels.  It took news much longer to reach you.  And as such, it was often a real surprise.  Surprised by good news - now that is a surprise we all like to get.

The Anger of God

This week was an unusual week of sermon preparation for me.  I had been working on another dumb thing smart Christians believe, that Christians shouldn't be angry.  It seemed like each person I talked to about the topic said they didn't believe that.  I found that interesting since I have seen it play out in many people's lives.  The dangers of anger have caused many to, in Pharisaical fashion, build a hedge around anger so that they didn't commit the sin of being angry.  So they weren't angry, they were frustrated.  They were irritated.  They were upset.  They were disappointed.  Anything but angry.  Of course the scripture warns against unbridled anger or a disposition of anger, but it also says that we are not to sin in our anger.

Still, I switched topics for the one you got Sunday and have put the study on anger on a back burner.  One interesting path my study had taken was a look at the anger of God.  What things does the scripture tells us make God angry?  It is that question which will make up the foundation of a short series I will fit in sometime next year.
